Cecelia A Box Endowed Teaching Fellowship, Est by Ric Cooper

Purpose
This fellowship endowment is established in honor of Cecelia A Box to provide financial support to outstanding full-time students seeking professional teaching licensure. Cecelia A Box was an Associate Professor in the Secondary Education Department from 1993-1999. During that time she observed first-hand the challenges and sacrifices students faced carrying the full-time commitment of student teaching, which, for so many, conflicted with their ability to support themselves at other jobs. Cecelia A Box established the Jack & Fran Kaufman Endowed Scholarship for Student Teaching at Metropolitan State University of Denver in August of 2016, which is available to students seeking support during the semester of their full-time student teaching assignment.

Criteria
The fellowship recipient shall:

• Completing Student Teaching or Residency in Fall 18’
• Be meeting MSU Denver’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements and cannot be in default or owe any refund/repayment of federal, state or institutional aid.
• Must have completed all required coursework and qualifications to be eligible to be a resident or student teacher in one of the School of Education (SOE) approved programs.
• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.2.
• Must be a student-teacher or resident during the fall or spring semester. This fellowship is not available for summer teaching assignments.
• May be a resident or student teacher at any level (i.e., early childhood, elementary, secondary) or in any area of specialization (i.e., special education, arts, etc.) approved by the School of Education.
• Must submit such documentation as the Selection Committee may require of Applicant’s need for financial support during the semester of their student teaching.
• Accompany application with a personally-written essay responding to the following prompt. Essay length should be no more than 500 words. Prompts may be changed by Addendum.

In order to gain a deeper perspective into what motivates prospective Cecelia A Box Fellows, please share:
- why you would like to become a teacher;
- the role that teachers play in positively impacting children, communities and the profession of teaching;
- a description of your own personal experiences with schools or children, as well as your own background, interests, or inspirations that uniquely qualify you for this Fellowship.
The quality of your writing is very important, specifically, spelling, grammar, and voice.

• Upload a recommendation letter from a faculty member who is not a member of the School of Education Scholarship Selection Committee.
• Upload a recommendation letter from a member of the community, preferably from a teacher, who can advocate for the student and describe why the student is worthy of this Fellowship.

Preference is given to students involved in a full-year student teaching residency program.
The preferred annual award amount is $5,000 fall semester and $5,000 spring semester.
Any annual award amounts remaining in the annual award account in excess of the preferred annual award amount of $5,000 each semester should be retained in the annual award account for use in future years.
