Paul Farkas Memorial English Scholarship

Purpose:
Paul Farkas joined the English Department in 1972 and taught for 36 years. Among his contributions over the years, he served as the department’s Composition Coordinator, on the Program Review and other committees, and with the Honors Program. Paul received a B.A. from St Edwards University, a M.A. from the University of New Orleans, and a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. In addition to his love for literature, Paul enjoyed biking, hiking, and classical music. Paul believed that “the teaching profession is a noble one, one with principles, ideas, and practices that nurture the liberal tradition and the individuals we serve.” Dr. Farkas was universally liked by his students and his colleagues, and he was referred to as “inspiring, enthusiastic, compassionate, pleasant, energetic, insightful, friendly, and joyful”. He always made time for students and faculty who frequently visited his office, as he was always ready to share new ideas. Dr. Farkas was well known on campus as an “advisor, mentor, brilliant professor, gentleman, and big idea man”. He taught students to develop ideas and think for themselves. His legacy will remain for generations to come.

The fund is established to provide financial assistance to English majors at MSU Denver.

Criteria:
• Have a declared major in English at Metropolitan State University of Denver (Honors English is also allowed)
• Be a freshman, sophomore or junior during the semester(s) the scholarship is received;
• Have at least 12 credit hours left to fulfill to graduate
• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
• Be a U.S. citizen
• Be a Colorado Resident
• Be taking 12 credit hours during the semester(s) the scholarship is received
• Submit a 10-15 page critical literary analysis on a topic chosen by the student. This paper may be written specifically for the scholarship or can be a paper previously submitted for a class.

Renewal – scholarship can be received for multiple years if the applicant re-applies and meets the qualifications (contingent on available funds).
