Gene Amole Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Purpose:
Scholarships to annually benefit a student majoring in journalism with a print emphasis.

The scholarship was established by the staff of the Rocky Mountain News to honor Gene Amole. He believed strongly in the importance of print journalism and the staff wanted to support future journalists. Gene Amole’s columns delighted readers of the Rocky Mountain News for almost 25 years. Whether he wrote about family, ole Denver, seasons, technology, values, public works, holidays or men at war, Amole’s wisdom, wit and humanity earned him a loyal following throughout Colorado. Born in Denver, Gene Amole was educated in the Denver Public Schools and spent most of his life in the Mile High City. He had careers in radio, television, and newspapers, sometimes all at the same time. Amole’s fine writing and broadcasting skills earned him numerous awards, including, at various times and from various organizations, Man of the year (twice), Journalist of the Year, Columnist of the Year (three times), broadcaster of the Year, and Educator of the Year. He was inducted into the Denver Press Club Hall of Fame in 1997 and was named journalism’s “Shining Star,” the Colorado Press Association’s highest honor, in 1998. His columns have been collected in four books: Morning 1984, Amole Again In 1987, Amole One More Time in 1998 and the Last Chapter in 2002.

Criteria:
• Be a journalism major, with a print emphasis
• Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
• Have a minimum 12 credit hour enrollment
• Have demonstrated outstanding motivation, talent, and integrity in the journalism field

This award is renewable (contingent on available funds).
