Elizabeth Anne Kern Endowed Scholarship

Purpose
The Fund is established to support non-traditional students in their pursuit of an undergraduate degree at MSU Denver, as the cost of higher education continues to increase. Elizabeth “Anne” Kern was the first in her family to graduate college. She was honored as an outstanding graduate from the University of Colorado Denver in 1987, with a degree in marketing. Anne was attending school as a widowed mother of two young daughters and, despite life’s challenges, enjoyed her experience as a non-traditional college student. Continuing her education provided a unique international opportunity as Anne and the girls moved to England, where she her earned a master’s degree in International Business at City, University of London in 1988. Anne credits her education for expanding her mind, advancing her career opportunities, and helping her connect with her daughters – who have also gone on to graduate from college. Anne served as the Coordinator of Business Outreach for Metro State’s School of Business from 1994 through 1999. During this time Anne felt a connection to the school’s mission, which inspired this scholarship at MSU Denver.

Criteria
The scholarship recipient shall:
• Be meeting the University’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements and cannot be in default or owe any refund/repayment of federal, state or institutional aid.
• Have financial need as determined by FAFSA and the University’s Office Financial Aid and Scholarships
• Be an undergraduate student
• Be enrolled full-time, with a minimum of 12 credit hours in the semester the award is received
• Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
• Be a Colorado resident
• Be classified as a non-traditional student
• Write a 500-word essay demonstrating your understanding of the challenges faced by a non-traditional student seeking a higher education degree
