Zonta Club of Denver Hershey Endowed Scholarship

Purpose:
The Fund is established to provide scholarships to single-parent students at the University.
Edna Jean Hershey was born in Denver in 1904. She earned a B.A. from the University of Denver in 1925, an M.A. in Vocational Education at Colorado State University in 1945, and in 1954, an Ed.D. in Administration at the University of Denver. She worked for Denver
Public Schools for over 25 years and was instrumental in founding Denver Girls, Inc., a mentoring, and counseling program for at-risk girls in the Denver Public Schools. Miss Hershey was a member of the Zonta Club of Denver from 1935 until her death in 1977. A bequest from her to the Zonta Club of Denver is the source of this gift.

Criteria:
The scholarship recipient shall:
•Be meeting the University’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements and cannot be in default or owe any refund/repayment of federal, state or institutional aid.
•Have financial need as determined by FAFSA and the University’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships
•Be classified as a sophomore, junior or senior
•Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
•Be a Colorado Resident
•Be enrolled in at least three credit hours
•Be a single parent with sole or joint custody of one or more minor children at the beginning of the semester to which the scholarship would apply Zonta Club of Denver Hershey Endowment
•Have a declared major in education, gender studies, or a healthcare or behavioral health field
•Write a 500-word essay about how your personal experience as a custodial parent of a minor child or children has influenced what you have chosen to study, and how in your intended career you might help to make the world a better place for women and girls.

This scholarship is renewable, and preference is to award an otherwise-qualified applicant who has previously been a recipient of Zonta Club of Denver Hershey Scholarship.

Insofar as funds are available, it is the preference of the Donor that scholarships be sufficient to cover the full amount of the recipient’s tuition, fees and books for the semester.
