Wesley and Ethel Temple Endowed Scholarship

Purpose:
The Fund exists to provide scholarships to first-generation students interested in learning how to solve problems affecting the environment.

Paul and Pam Lander chose MSU Denver as the focus of their philanthropy because, “the
University is by, for and about Colorado students.” They hope to inspire others in the community to help MSU Denver students, too. Paul Lander worked as the head of the City of Boulder Water Conservation Office before becoming a university instructor and working for other professional organizations. Mr. Lander served on the board of the One World One Water Center, having joined at its inception in the spring of 2012. Mr. Lander decided to honor his grandparents, Wes and Ethel Temple, by endowing this scholarship for students interested in learning how to solve problems affecting the environment.

Wes and Ethel Temple grew up in the Wheat Ridge area, and both graduated from Wheat Ridge High School in 1912. Ethel went on to the Teacher’s College in Greeley, then they married in Denver and raised two girls, Leona and Barbara. The family was actively engaged in their community, their church, and loved spending time with family in the beautiful mountains of Colorado and with relatives at the lakes of Minnesota. Wes had a variety of jobs in his life, including running the Temple Ink Company which sold printers’ ink to the Denver Post, and raising silver foxes with his brother, Martin and his wife, Helen – Ethel’s sister. Wes and Ethel believed strongly in education and worked to send both of their daughters to college – Leona to CU-Boulder and Barbara to Stephen’s College in Missouri.
