Ed Langer Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Purpose:
The Fund is established to provide scholarships to students at the University. In honor of the memory of Ed Langer, at the request of his widow, Jo Langer, who is establishing the Fund. Jo requests that the University determine the best and highest use of this scholarship fund by utilizing the below criteria to guide selection.

Ed Langer, a distinguished alumnus of Notre Dame, graduated in 1959 with a BS in Physics and later completed a BA in English. His academic journey continued with a MS in Physics at Cornell University in 1963 and a PhD in Astrophysics at UCBoulder in 1969. Ed’s teaching career began as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Tuskegee Institute, where he taught for two years. Throughout his tenure teaching physics at Colorado College, Ed inspired countless students with his wisdom. He emphasized the value of continuous learning, urging students to approach the future with purpose. Ed’s advice extended beyond academia, promoting time spent outdoors for thoughtful reflection, and advocating for love, kindness, and the pursuit of justice. This scholarship reflects our confidence in your abilities, and we sincerely wish you success in shaping a fulfilling life.

Criteria:
The scholarship recipient shall:
• Be meeting the University’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements and cannot be in default or owe any refund/repayment of federal, state or institutional aid.
• Be degree seeking
• Have financial need as determined by FAFSA/CASFA and the University’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
• Write an essay, 500 words or less describing how you relate to students from diverse backgrounds and why diversity is important within a classroom environment?

Preference shall be given to students who are the first in their families to attend college, also referred to as first-generation students.
DACA/ASSET/Undocumented students are eligible for this scholarship
