Gloria Tanner Scholarship

Purpose:
The Fund is established to provide scholarships to students who have aspirations to become involved in public service or run for political office.

Gloria Travis Tanner was the first African American to serve on the state Senate and a member of the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame and the second to be elected to a leadership position in the Colorado House of Representatives. Gloria attended MSU Denver and earned her degree in political science. From 1994-2001, she served in the Colorado Senate, where she was selected for the influential joint budget committee. In her 16 years in the state legislature, Tanner worked toward legislation on an abandoned baby law, civil rights for women and minorities and parental rights for adoptive parents.

Criteria:
• Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
• Be enrolled at least half-time (6 or more credit hours) during the semester the scholarship is awarded
• Write a short essay of (250 words or less) describing how you relate to the experience of African American women.
• Qualified candidates may be interviewed by the scholarship committee.
• Meet current University standards to receive financial aid or scholarships.

Preference is for a student who has an interest in running for public and/or political office
Preference is for juniors and seniors.
Based on the availability of funds, preference is for one student to receive as close to a $5,000 scholarship as possible per academic year
The scholarship is renewable (contingent on available funds) for two academic years.
